George Ioannou is a Marie-Skłodowska Curie early-stage researcher at the University of Cyprus. He received a MEng in Computer Science from the University of Bristol. As part of his degree, he conducted year abroad studies at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. His master’s thesis integrated deep learning to motion-sensor camera imagery to automatically detect European Wildlife. It was the first exploration of a large-scale European motion-sensor camera dataset, in which the off-the-shelf accuracy using optimized models was found to be 40.1% and was increased to 81.2% when working on a subset of the dataset.

His research focuses on performing data analytics to large-scale empirical data for identifying social influences and promoting well-being. His analysis of anonymized human mobility data from millions of people revealed that people who stay active with physical exercise share common interests, something which can lead to targeted interventions promoting exercise.

Previously, he was a research assistant intern at the Business & Public Administration Department of the University of Cyprus, performing pre-processing requirements of approximately 30 million data mined from YouTube and Twitter. He was also a software developer intern at Dot.cy, a Microsoft Gold Partner Company. While there, he passed the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customization and Configuration exam.
